LipsNspritz of the Week 06.12.15
After spending last weekend doused in Tom Ford's finest Black Orchid (albeit in the new Eau de Toilette version rather than the EdP), I was obviously stuck in a rather Tom Ford kind of groove for the early part of this week.
Monday brought Tom Ford Black Violet, a scent which I have always preferred to Black Orchid, for some reason (but it's now discontinued), a gloriously rich and decadent fragrance, one which reminds me of the glory days of women's cinema in the forties. It's a fragrance with shoulder pads and red lipstick, which I subverted by not wearing shoulder pads, and wearing with MAC Hot Tahiti, which is a slightly browned wine-shade, which reads like a neutral on my lips. I did wear black leather though ...
Tuesday was Tom Ford Tuscan Leather, long one of my favourite fragrances. I was surprised on wearing it this time, however (the first since I lost my sense of smell last year) that I can now pick up the raspberry notes that, in other writers descriptions, have always mystified me somewhat. A nice discovery! It still smells leathery to me - which I love - but now it has an extra dimension that I never noticed previously, a great thing. I wore it with Bare Minerals Call The Shots which is a great red lipstick.
Wednesday brought a neglected gem from my perfume collection, which was Maison Francis Kurkdjian Amyris Femme. This had been shuffled to the back of one of my drawers, and I confess that I'd completely forgotten about it as a result. I'm completely kicking myself about that now, as it is incredibly beautiful. I described it on Instagram as luminous and sheer, bright with citrus in the opening, and warm with woods and resins in the base. Classy and expensive-smelling, it's radiant and gorgeous, and I can't wait, actually, to wear it again. So I'm wearing it again today as I write this ... I paired it with Laura Mercier Cherries Jubilee Lip Parfait, which is a sheer natural red, which I like a great deal too.
I spent some of Thursday talking to various government bods (like you do) so I thought I'd wear something classic. Naturally, when I opened the box, I was a bit hacked off that my bottle of Chanel No 5 was actually a bottle of Chanel No5 Eau Premiere. Not the end of the world, admittedly, but annoying, especially when it turns out that Eau Premiere is just a little too restrained for my damaged nose to pick up in any detail. It's very nice, I'm sure, but it's no No5. Now I'm wondering where my bottle of No5 has got to, I know I have one! I wore it with Revlon ColorStay Moisture Stain in India Intrigue, which is one of my favourite pinks, as it lasts and lasts. It does dry a bit though.
On Friday, I was planning to meet some friends for dinner, so an old favourite fragrance was in order, and I picked Guerlain Pamplune Aqua Allegorica. Grapefruit scents have been tricky for me for a while, thanks to their sulphurous qualities (I struggle with vetiver as well for the same reason), but I think it's coming back now. Either way, Pamplune smelled good, well as good as a sweaty grapefruit (and I mean that in a good way) can, let's put it like that. I wore it with Smashbox Lip Lacquer in Legendary Red, which is a smashing red - I'm ashamed it's taken me so long to wear it.
Saturday I was ill, again, I'm totally fed up with it now, but it's becoming a way of life at the moment, it appears. Anyhoo, I still wanted to smell good, so I picked up my bottle of Balmain Ivoire, which is soapy-fabulous (even though rather thin in comparison to its 80's-tastic fabulousness before reformulations and re-releases happened to it) and classy and very, very clean. Still lovely. I had been planning to wear it with a revlon lipstain, but as I spent the day in my pyjamas, that didn't actually happen ...
What've you been wearing?

Ace of Base - RMK, Zelens Hourglass and Smashbox
Over on Instagram I'm always putting up pics of things that have recently arrived at Lippie Mansions, pictures of things I'm doing, and setting up pics of things that are upcoming for review. My ugly mug isn't on there too often, so you're quite safe, and if you like pictures of random products and the occasional badly framed picture of something not quite in focus with an "arty" filter over the top, why not pop over and give me a follow?
Anyhoo, Hourglass aside, these are some new base products that I've been using recently, that I really like, and I thought I'd give you the lowdown whilst I'm mulling over some full reviews on them.
So from Left to Right:
RMK Makeup Base
I'm going to preface this by saying that I think 91.73% of foundation primers on the market are a bit useless. In spite of the hype, I've never found one that helps pores disappear for a whole day, and I find that they do very little to extend the wear time of any foundation you wear over the top. That said, I do like Japanese makeup bases very much indeed because they are brilliant (and I do mean brilliant) at evening your skintone, and hiding high-colouring. If you have any tendency towards rosy-ness either in your cheek or nose area, then run, don't walk to either RMK or Paul & Joe (who also do a magnificent base) and plop a bit of this over your "glow-y" bits. You can get the RMK for £28 from Selfridges - mine was a gift with purchase, so it's not full-size.
Looks a bit chalky when you apply, but it will cover your pinkness wonderfully. You never know, it might also fill your pores and make your foundation last longer, but don't count on it.
Zelens Age Control Foundation
There has been a lot of hype about this new makeup range recently, and, I'm sad to say, most of it is completely justified. Sorry. It is. I'm a big fan of Zelens skincare, and I have to admit that Dr Marko Lens, the ebullient genius behind the brand is one of my favourite people (even though he does have an odd habit of removing bits of my face in his surgery every time I see him), what Dr Lens doesn't know about skin isn't really worth knowing.
I was super-excited that he was bringing his skin-care knowledge to cosmetics, and the first launches from the range haven't disappointed. The foundation is wonderfully smoothing and long-lasting, and it does a great job of simply gliding over pores, wrinkles and other flaws without settling into them, and just makes your skin look like skin, it has a slight satin-matte finish which most people won't need to powder over, but I do - because of redness issues.
I do like a foundation that doesn't draw attention to itself, and Age Control is a lovely, lovely but pricey addition to my foundation wardrobe. Will it knock Chantecaille off my top spot for invisible but (expensive and) amazing coverage? Watch this space.
Hourglass Ambient Light Powder in Diffused
This is my second back-up. I have literally never EVER hit pan on a face powder until the lightly-yellow-toned Diffused powder turned up in my life, and now I buy one whenever I can afford it simply because I just KNOW Hourglass are going to discontinue this at some point in time, and I shall be left with all the chalky, talc-y rubbish-y POWDERY powders in the world for a lifetime as a result. I HATE YOU HOURGLASS. Damn you for making a product SO GOOD that I panic that you are going to take it away from me. DAMN YOUR EYES.
[ahem] I really like this product. You might too.
Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Water
Yeah, you know when I said I didn't like primers then had two in one article? Because, I'm, like, well annoying? Well, I still think primers are rubbish. But I like this one very much anyway, and for similar reasons for the RMK makeup base above (ie for a different reason for what you'd suspect). You're supposed to spray this over your moisturiser and it is supposed to give you an amazing base for applying makeup over, and then it supposedly lasts and lasts and all that. I used it that way, and didn't really notice any difference to my normal application to be honest, but then I tried using it as a setting spray.
I was blown away, because it's a brilliant setting spray (something else I've been underwhelmed with in the past, I'll admit). It sort of laminates your makeup in place, without making it look like you've had your face laminated. Neat trick when you come to think of it.
Now, I like to think I'm actually pretty good at makeup and that, but the first time I tried layering these four products in the order shown, I got compliments on my skin, and how healthy I was looking all day. Which, considering my makeup was actually just a bit of black eyeliner smudged into my lashes and some coloured lip balm, was going some. I'm an accountant, and usually look like a gnome after a day crunching numbers, so this is either genuinely some kind of miraculous combination of (expensive - sorry!) products, or I've been ageing backwards over the Christmas holidays ...

Smashbox Full Exposure Palette
By Luke
There are a lot of palettes out there at the minute with all of those easy to use, neutral browny grey shades that no one can really live without.
By far the best I have seen is this one, with no less than 14 colours in it, in two finishes, WITH two brushes AND a guide for different shaped eyes on how to get the most out of all the colours without those all too common left in the palette coz I’m not sure how to use it colours.
The top layer has the nicest shades of bone, to taupe, brown and black in a lighter wash of shimmer, and the bottom has almost exactly the same colours, ALMOST but not quite for variety, in a fabulous shades of matte. Perfect.
This went straight into the kit, and if I can’t do a natural eye right through to a smoky eye with this baby, I need to hang up my brush belt.
Available from Samshbox.co.uk, and Boots stores, now and costs a measly £36.
Own it.

Top Five Favourite Blushers
Since I had my colour-draping back in June, I've been looking to replace my not-quite-right golden coral blushes with something a little cooler and pinker. For a long time, I never wore blusher at all, fearing I'd look like a clown, or Aunt Sally or something, but I realise these days that my makeup simply isn't complete without blusher, and finding the right shade is deeply important. I've been building up this tiny blusher wardrobe for the last few months, and here are my current favourites:
Clockwise from bottom left, we have:
Cargo - Bali
Art Deco - Blush Couture
Illamasqua Velvet Blusher - Peaked
Smashbox Halo Longwear Blush - In Bloom
Laura Geller Blush'n'Brighten - Ethereal Rose/Sateen Subtle Berry
All are pinks or plums of varying intensities, except Smashbox In Bloom, which is a rather pinked coral, which is probably the brightest shade here. Swatches:
Swatched in the same order, you can see Cargo Bali has a slight hint of blue microshimmer, giving the pinkish coral a cooler overtone. Art Deco Blush Couture is a lovely soft plum with a smooth satin finish. Illamasqua Peaked (in the centre) is a very cool raspberry purple, which is a glorious shade, but I find it rather hard to apply naturalistically, it definitely needs a duo-fibre brush and an extremely light hand. Smashbox In Bloom is a pretty pink-coral that is great with an extremely natural look for lightening and brightening my face. I love it. And then there is the Laura Geller Ethereal Rose, which is the one I've had the most use out of recently. It's probably the most subtle of the five here, but it still gives a great subtle glow, and a fabulous highlight effect.
Here's how they photograph with a flash:
As you can see, only Peaked and In Bloom have a matte finish.
What's your favourite blusher at the moment?

Smashbox Limitless Lip Stain in Sangria
I don't have a lot of luck with lipstains, as a lot of them have the nasty habit of being a bit too blue, and just showing up as fuchsia when they're on the skin or lips, no matter what the shade promised on the box or barrel. So I approached the new Smashbox limitless lipstains with no little trepidation. This is the shade "Sangria". Some of you who follow me on Twitter may find this amusing.
Based on a marker pen bullet-tip - you use the pointed end to line your lips, then turn it so you can fill in the rest of your lips with the side of the bullet - the Limitless Lipstain differs from it's current rivals by having a coloured balm on the end, to intensify the shade and make it more comfortable in wear.
Delighted by the swatches, that show this to be a deep, rich and highly pigmented red, from the marker I couldn't wait to try this on my lips, where things just got better:
Perfect blood-red lips with no feathering, I couldn't really love this shade any more.
Or could I? Well, I could only love it more if it lasted longer. I wore this through a recent breakfast meeting, and it was defeated by half a plate of scrambled eggs, leading to a Red Ring of Doom situation ... so bear in mind, this may need reapplying if you're planning to do anything with your lips besides pouting during the day ...
Smashbox products can be difficult to find, but you can usually find them in Debenhams, and you can definitely find them on QVC.
The Fine Print: This popped up in a recent goody bag. But I love the colour so much I'll be purchasing a backup. I'll just have to give up eating eggs.

Smashbox All in Bloom Palette
Pastels schmastels. If there is anything I really don't like about spring, it's the insistence that we're all going to be prancing around in pastel shades on eyes, nails and lips and clothes. I don't do pastels. I think pastels only really suit six years olds. There, I said it.
And ... breathe ...
Now I've got that off my chest, I've been made very happy that so many of this season's releases have been a little more ... muted. Some might say dull, I say wearable, tomaytoes, tomartoes. Smashbox isn't a brand I buy from very often, but I've been happy with this little palette.
It contains ten shades, of muted pinks, purples, peaches, greens and browns, which I, for one, find very wearable. It's meant to be laid out in pairs so that you can wear the colours together. There are no shade names available, so I've numbered them for you. Shades 1, 2, 4, 9 & 10 are matte, and 3, 5, 6, 7 & 8 have shimmer. Here are the swatches:
All were swatched on bare skin with a slightly damp brush. Initial thoughts are that shades 3 & 4 are very similar, only number three is more shimmery than number 4 so it looks a little lighter in the swatch. I think my favourites are 7 & 8, I'll be wearing them today. I found that the paler matte shades (1 & 9) were a little chalky, especially the pink shade, so I urge a little caution when you're using those ones.
All in all, I think this is a great little multi-purpose palette suitable for a variety of skintones, and it's exceedingly versatile. Shades are well-pigmented overall (ignoring the two pale chalky mattes), and it's a palette I expect to get a fair amount of use out of.
So tell me, how do you feel about pastels?
The Fine Print: Palette was received as part of an event goodie bag, not sent for review purposes, I just liked it.

Makeover: Kerry
After a bit of last minute confusion with one of my other volunteers, the lovely Kerry stepped in to have a makeover, and I'm glad she did, as this is one of my favourites!
Meet Kerry:
Then, to make the most of Kerry's gorgeous eyes, I made use of a Bobbi Brown palette I have that features mainly chocolate shades, I applied a shimmer wash of colour over Kerry's lids, then defined the crease with a darker shimmery brown shade:
Meet Kerry:
Kerry is really very pretty already, with enormous green eyes. Sometimes Kerry thinks she looks a bit young (never an issue as far as I'm concerned!) so was looking to create a sophisticated "grown-up" look, that was hopefully a bit glamorous too.
As always, we started with the base. Kerry has beautiful porcelain skin, so we used Bobbi Brown liquid foundation in "porcelain" as the main base, and Benefit's You're Bluffing as a concealer on the birthmark on her upper lip. I decided against using Bluffdust as a powder because Kerry is so pale, and we used ELF HD Powder to set the look instead:

Once they were in place, I lined the eyes with "coffee, and applied just a little more shimmer to Kerry's lids:
Once that was in place, I darkened Kerry's brows just a little (with Smashbox brow powder kit), and added a single layer of Clarins Wonder Perfect Mascara, the difference was amazing!
A light touch of Cargo Plant Love's Wind (please note no schoolgirl jokes today, thank you) around the cheekbones and temples to warm the look up a bit, and then I used NARS Sex Machine on Kerry's lips, and finished with a tiny slick of Dior lipgloss (the name of which has worn off, but is a very pale pink with a hint of green iridescence. Nicer than it sounds, honest!) Here's how it looked when it was all put together:
And here's the before and after:
Many thanks for stepping in Kerry, hope you liked your new look!

Review - Clarins Wonder Perfect Mascara
I love mascara. Specifically, I love Lancome Hypnose, and Lancome Hypnose Drama (though the brush on that one drives me a bit bonkers, if I'm being really honest), I've tried other mascaras, but for me, nothing really comes close.
Clarins recently ran a giveaway on their Facebook page, and I was lucky enough to win a sample sized tube, and, I have to say, it's been the only mascara I've used since (I've toyed with Smashbox DNA which is going in the bin, and Max Factor Lash Extension, which I think is a bit rubbish as well) because, well, it delivers.
Here's what Clarins say:
"A multi-dimensional, 3-in-1 mascara, that ensures oversized volume, curl and length, with an instant and intense effect. From the first brush stroke, lashes are coated from root to tip with smooth, even, deeply pigmented colour and a beautiful lash look.
3-in-1 capabilities to ensure impressive volume, length and curl.
- Incredibly thick, volumized lashes, perfectly separated, no clumping.
- Infinitely long lashes, highlighted along their base by a superb eyeliner effect.
- Lashes with a spectacular curl that always remain supple."
And here's how it looks as compared to my natural lashes (one coat):

As you can see, the lashes on the left there are definitely longer and thicker. After I add the mascara to the other eye (I'm not wearing any makeup in these pics whatsoever, aside from the mascara) here's how they look:
I think the product actually delivers on all three claims, which is beyond amazing, and compared to the Lancome (which has been my Holy Grail mascara since the first time I ever tried it) it doesn't flake or run after about six hours, which has long been a failing of the Lancome though I've been loathe to admit it ...
I like what this mascara does for my eyes so much that recently it's been the only makeup I've worn besides some lip balm, which, a few years ago would have been simply unthinkable, it's amazing that a mascara can in itself convince me not to wear eyeliner! I also think it's down to being happy with what my new skin care routine is doing for me, and I'll be blogging about that in a bit more detail later on in the week.
What's your Holy Grail Mascara? What would make you change products?

Makeover: Mel
It Sunday Makeover time, and this week I was delighted to welcome along Mel:
Mel's a schoolteacher, and was looking for a simple and easy day time look that suits her colouring. Mel actually owns a bit of very lovely makeup, but doesn't use it very often, so I was hoping to show her how to get the most of some of the things she already owns, and introduce her to a couple of techniques to get the best out of her routine.
First of all, we started with the base, to even out Mel's skintone we used YSL Perfect Touch Foundation, and for the slightly darker skin around her eyes, we used By Terry Eclat de Teint to conceal. I like both of these products as they have the brush built in already, and they're super-quick and easy to use:
Mel has really lovely grey/blue eyes, so we decided that they would be the feature. As we were trying to keep this simple, we use Benefit Creaseless Cream eyeshadow in RSVP all over the lid, up to the brow area:
Then, to define the crease - and as an eyeliner - we used Cargo Plant Love eyeshadow in Sparrow:
Then a lick of mascara
And we were ready to add the finishing touches, which in this case were a light dusting of Cargo's Plant Love Illuminator in Wind over the cheeks and temples, and a light coat of Estee Lauder's lipstick in "Beige". I also darkened Mel's eyebrows a touch with Smashbox eyebrow powder:
Lovely, quick, and natural. Here's the before and afters:
Thank you, Mel. Let me know when you want to go shopping!
