Time for a new do ...

It's summer.  Allegedly.  And it's time for a hair cut.  I remain, as ever, terrified of getting my hair cut, in spite of a) being very good friends with one of the best colourists in the UK (aka Jack Howard) and b) being a regular member of the Creative Head Most Wanted Awards judging panel for the last four years!

As a result, I haven't had my hair cut in eight months (I had to get it cut before it was permed last year), and I'm sick of the sight of it.  It is far, far, far too long.  Whilst it looked good at my wedding:

And can look good at other times too:

But mostly it's just tied up.  Out of the way.

There is, frankly, TOO MUCH HAIR, and I'm bored with it. I'll not mention that it is currently dryer than the bloody Kalahari too... There's four more months growth since these pics were taken, too ...

So, I'm going for the big chop tomorrow.  I've booked myself in with the lovely Darren at Webster Whiteman and I've been playing with some celeb pics on my Pinterest and Instagram, and these are my front-runner ideas so far (ignore the colours, it's the cuts I'm interested in):

Desperate not to look mumsy ... but I do need an easier to control style!

Any styles you like?  Any of you also desperate to go for the big chop too?

Webster Whiteman Wedding Hair Trial

I do love the team at Webster Whiteman, and I'm beginning to think that I don't go and visit them nearly often enough. During my last visit (far too long ago), they sorted out my colour, gave me an excellent blowdry, and I was very happy with them. More importantly, I was very comfortable in their lovely Mayfair salon - it feels like a real home from home, an increasing rarity in London.  These days, my colour is always sorted by Jack Howard, but I haven't settled on a stylist yet, and I remain terrified of getting my hair cut!

However, as the wedding draws ever nearer, and my Pinterest Hair Inspiration board gets ever bigger, I thought it was time to finally try and find a stylist I like and trust. And the first place I looked was, of course, Webster Whiteman.  Last Monday, I found myself having a good old chat with Darren Webster about what I want and need for my wedding hair.  I've mentioned several times that my hair is a bit mental, it likes to get out and party the second there's a hint of moisture in the air, and it is this tendency, coupled with a February wedding that means I really need an updo that can stay put.

Darren listened to all my concerns, had a darn good play with my hair, and then suggested three or four different styles that might work.  Here's a sneaky peek at what we came up with:

Style One:

We'd originally tried a really deconstructed, and completely un-smooth look, which wasn't quite what I was after, so we tried a quite traditional updo, that had plaits woven in, to make it a little edgier.  I liked the height, liked the interesting details, and was quite happy with this, but we decided to take it even smoother for the next look:

Style Two:

I absolutely loved this in the chair, I think it shows off the colour very well, and I love how it shows off the plait details.  It looks a little "Lady Gaga-ish" and I thought it would be interesting from the back.  Looking at it now, however (and especially after the next look), I'm not entirely sure about it.

We then went for something very different to the previous two, which instead of featuring a plait (or two), actually is a plait, take a look:

Style Three:

It's not quite perfect - Darren and I both agree that it needs a little more height at the top - but I  love how complex this looks, and how simple it was to actually do.  It is, essentially, a fishtail plait which has been looped around, and caught up in itself.  It feels very secure, and I really like how it has something interesting at every angle.  And, whilst plaits are rather trendy at the moment, something about treating the plait this way makes it feel more timeless.  I like how it shows off the different colours in my hair, too.

So, what do you think about my first wedding hair trial?

Review - Webster Whiteman

One of the most surreal - and proudest! - moments of my blogging "career" to date was being invited to judge one of the awards for this year's Creative Head Most Wanted awards.  I don't, in all honesty consider myself a hair blogger, but I can't deny that I am interested in hair, hairdressing and styling, so it was a great honour to be asked.

I was judging the Online Salon category, (click here for a full list of winners), and one of the finalists in my category was the team at Webster Whiteman,  I think I may have been more disappointed  than them when they didn't win the award, as I thought their website was a great one, it introduced the team beautifully, and gave a real sense of what the salon is all about.  Go check out their "meet the team" page, which is a great example of a salon with a great sense of humour!

So, when my roots needed sorting out recently (seriously, it's such a bind being an elderly brunette, you know),  I popped along to the comfy, and wonderfully unpretentious, Webster Whitman salon in the heart of Mayfair, just to see if their real life presence was as good as their online one.

I have to say that I wasn't disappointed in the slightest, the entire team is friendly, welcoming, and delightfully down to earth.  Even though the salon is situated slap bang in one of the ritziest areas of London, it's not at all intimidating, and throughout my three hours in the salon (which flew!), I was amazed at the assortment of diverse characters the salon manages to attract, from ladies who lunch to busy businessmen, to the occasionally slightly stressed and vaguely pre-occupied beauty blogger.

I think a large part of this is down to the staff, I chatted to the owners Darren Webster and Lisa Whiteman, who were both busy on the floor themselves, and I had a wonderful time in the hands of award-winning colourist Claire and also with Becky who did my blow-dry.  Both girls are amazing talents, and I won't be surprised if Becky is going to be a rising star in her own right one day, certainly someone who can teach me how to blow dry my fringe properly in a way I can actually remember a couple of weeks later certainly deserves a medal!

So, how did they do?  Well, I was happy with the last cut I received at the Chapel, and I'm still kind of in love with the highlights I had then too, but I was in desperate need of having my horrific roots covered up, so Claire and I  had a chat about covering them up, then blending them in via a semi-permanent shade throughout the lengths, so I wouldn't lose the highlighted effect.  I have to say that I think this has worked magnificently, my hair is shinier, my roots aren't grey, and I still have a gorgeous lightly sun-dappled effect:

As for the blow dry - and my love for a good "bouncy" blow-dry is becoming legendary in certain circles - with Becky, this is the result, full-bodied, but still wonderfully natural-looking, and full of shine:

Love it.  To the team at WebsterWhiteman, thank you very much.

The Fine Print: This knackered beauty-blogger was a guest of Webster Whitman, and is very grateful.
