Urban Decay Vice Palette 4 - first look!
Okay, it's not a Christmas collection, but I think any makeup addict would be delighted with this in
their Christmas stocking this year! The Vice palettes from Urban Decay have long been a cult with beauty bloggers, and I suspect this will be no exception, either. Inspired by the colours of an oil slick, it's so pretty!
Gloriously detailed on the outside, with iridescent overlays, and coming in a foiled pouch, Vice 4 is beautifully packed up.
Inside though, is what really matters, and inside doesn't disappoint:
A pretty mixture of neutrals and brights (but mostly brights, admitedly) this a gorgeous palette for all ages, especially if you love playing with your makeup. I can think of one little girl who's going to love this one this year! (it's okay, I don't think she's reading this ...)
Urban Decay Vice 4 palette is instore now, and costs £43 for 20 eyeshadows and one double ended brush. Will you be splashing out on colour this Christmas?

Sleek Christmas Collection 2015
I'm a sucker for a Christmas collection, I am and this is a very pretty one from Sleek this year! Glittering finishes and beautiful metallics abound including the gorgeous i-lust palette above.
Named after famous designers, Margiela and Louis are cream shades and the rest are sparkling powders. The pigmentation is deep and lush, as you would expect from Sleek, and this is a nice, neutral selection of quite sparkly colours. Did I mention they're quite sparkly?

Chantecaille Autumn/Winter 2015 - Protect the Wolves Collection
Every August, Chantecaille release their autumn charity collection and this year it is wolf-themed. 5% of the proceeds of each "Protect the Wolf" collection product will be donated to the Northwest Conservation group. I love the animal palettes, and this years collection is a nice one:
A nude lip, a smokey eye palette and a peachy blush, it's bang on trend for a winter palette (well, if you can wear nude lips, it is). Let's take a closer look:
From left to right in the eye palette, we have Evergreen, which is a sparkling blackened pine green. Then there is Timber Wolf, a beautiful metallic old gold taupe, and finally Midnight which is a slightly shimmering soft black.
The taupe (for Chantecaille are the queens of taupe) is perfect for every day, and you can use the black and green either as liners for a daytime look, or smoke them out for a more dramatic night time look. If you use them without a primer, you will get a very subtle look, but the above has been swatched over primer.

The Lip Chic is called Patience, and is the usually balm-y feeling wondrous texture of the lip chics. A soft, peachy nude, it's sheer, but not unpigmented. Sadly, this particular shade is one that makes me look like death warmed up, so I won't be wearing it out of the house. It'll cost £30 when it is released in August, however.
A good companion to Patience Lip Chic is the Ella Blush, which comes complete with an embossed wolf head, as does the eye palette. Another soft peach, this is a perfect complement to the smokey eye palette, and is a good match to the lip colour. It will cost £33 when it is released in August.
Here's the entire collection swatched - Ella blush at the top, Patience Lip Chic at the bottom. and with the eye palette in the middle. It's a well thought out. and tightly edited collection.
Will you be helping Chantecaille save the wolves this year?

Laura Mercier Caviar Stick in Rose Gold
I'm still on an eye pencil kick I'm afraid, but I've saved my absolute favourites for this week. This is Laura Mercier's Caviar Stick in Rose Gold. I may be wrong, but I think these were the first "cult" shadow sticks on the blogging circuit, and I've always had a soft spot for them.
Rose Gold is a lovely easy to wear fleshy shade, perfect for a polished, but barely perceptible makeup look.
I like this paired with a simple smokey liner for a really easy and long-lasting (but not too glittery, unlike some of the others I've featured recently) daytime look.
It is a smooth and creamy formula, that glides on over the lids easily without any dragging. I find it blends easily, and sets quite quickly, and it lasts for hours without creasing.
It's basically idiot-proof, and I'm just the idiot to prove it. Laura Mercier Caviar Sticks cost £22 each from SpaceNK.

Charlotte Tilbury Colour Chameleon Eye Pencil in Amethyst Aphrodisiac
I'm on a lazy makeup roll this week, and a bit of a pencil kick too, which brings me to Charlotte Tilbury's cult range of "colour morphing" pencils, the Colour Chameleon range. They are gorgeous pencils, but I did find the "colour morphing" claims a little incomprehensible until I figured out that the colours that were "morphing" were your eye colours, not the pencil shades.
My eyes are rather an unusual colour, being brown, green and yellow plus having hints of blue in the limbal ring, so first off picking the right colour of pencil for my eyes was difficult. They're based on the colour wheel principle of complementary colours, and I couldn't figure out if you'd class my eyes as green, or brown or hazel, as there's a day and a night option of pencil for every eye colour (but not, it seems, for eyes of every colour). Eventually I picked the purple Amethyst Aphrodisiac to play up the green in my eyes.
These are glitter city! I must mention it, because they are the most glittery things I put on my eyes these days, and I can find glitter in the oddest places even after a very thorough cleanse! Do not, under any circumstances, use these to line the inner rim of the eye, I think they could definitely scratch your cornea, and no one needs that.
It's a good and murky purple:
Creamy, and easy to blend, I apply this as a thick line of eyeliner, then blend it out towards the crease. It sets after around 30 seconds or so, and is pretty hard to budge after that time. I'm quite happy to wear it during the day, but for a more dramatic look, it is great with very black eyeliner too. The colour lasts well, even on unprimed eyelids, I only experience creasing after a very long time in wear (after around ten hours or so), and on primed lids it will probably last even longer. I rarely prime my lids if I'm in a hurry though. The glitter will remain though, I warn you!
You will need a pencil sharpener for this as it is not retractable, and they are sold seperately. Colour Chameleon pencils are available from Selfridges and Charlottetilbury.com and cost £19 each.

ByTerry Ombre Blackstar eyeshadow sticks
I mentioned yesterday that my makeup routine takes me around five minutes, and it does. Some days, I can barely be bothered applying makeup at all, and so a little liquid liner and a bright, bright lipstick is all I do, over a CC cream, or something. On the days when I want a stronger look, I increasingly find myself reaching for eyeshadow sticks, as they're pretty foolproof, and I am both lazy and a cackhanded muppet.
Here we have ByTerry's cult favourite Ombre Blackstar eyeshadow sticks in Midnight Forest, a deep, deep blackened green, plus Ombre Mercure, a greyish taupe, and Black Pearl a shimmering softly glittering black.
Closeup of Ombre Mercure |
Here you can see there are subtle hints of bronze in the green, but the taupe is pretty much a universal shade. I like to use Black Pearl and Midnight Forest as thick liners, applying close to the lashes, then smudging out over the mobile lid. Ombre Mercure I use more as a traditional eyeshadow, and wear with a separate liner.
They're gloriously smudgy, and blend beautifully, but they do eventually set, and will stay in place most of the day. I do experience some creasing after a particularly long day, but that is easily rectified by just re-blending with a fingertip. You can wear them over primer too, which increases their opacity, and decreases smudging, but I rarely bother.
However, they are glittery, especially Black Pearl. You will end up with glittery lids. I normally abhor glitter - especially on nails for some reason, and bar glitter actually makes me feel a bit sick - but eye crayons like this are about the one thing I'll make an exception for, convenience trumps sparkle!
byTerry Ombre Blackstar eyeshadows are £29 each and are available from SpaceNK. I am just miffed they never EVER have the purple one in stock whenever I visit ...
The Fine Print: Purchases. Look there was a sale on, okay? And I had a voucher. Any rumours that I had to sell a kidney to buy these are completely unfounded.

Hourglass Modernist Palette in Exposure
Not so much a review this, as basic eyeshadow porn. Hourglass have recently released their Modernist palettes of five eyeshadow shades pressed into a single pan. They're beautiful.
Packaging is the basic metallic brown, in a similar size to their multi-powder palettes, but it is inside where the magic happens:
A blend of shimmering champagne, satin dark mauve, metallic taupe, satin blackened purple, and a light shimmering mauve.
I swatched these briefly (finger swatches on bare, unprimed skin), but I haven't worn them properly yet - had to get the pictures for the blog first!
Thoughts are favourable so far, if a bit gritty, but I will post a full review when I've had a chance to see the palette properly in action.
In the meantime, you can get the Modernist palettes from SpaceNK where they cost £52.
One last look:

Sleek Eye and Cheek and Precious Metal Highlighting Palettes
This week
I’ve been wearing more eyeshadow than usual. I admit that generally
my habit is to wack a bit of smudgy liner or chubby eyeshadow stick
around my eyes, finish with mascara and some kind of eyebrow pencil
and move on to blush and lipstick. I am to lipstick as a problem
hoarder is to month old newspapers and dusty odd souvenirs. I have a
problem. But like a lot of you, I imagine, I also have lots of lovely
palettes I rarely use. So when I was recently given another three by
Sleek makeup I had to steal myself to use them, and I’m really glad
I did.
The palette I
used most was Dancing Til Dusk; with four wearable shadows in light
taupes and dark browns (Au Naturel iDivine) and two blushes, in
Mirrored Pink, and Sahara, it’s really versatile. The two lighter
shadows which match my skintone in matt and shimmery finishes, and
the two darker cocoa-coloured shades in shimmery and matt finishes
look like they’d be lovely shadow bases on darker skintones.
The shadows
are all well pigmented, soft and blendable. I used the dark browns as
a liner and the shimmery light taupes up to my browbone. With a bit
of pink blush, it was really easy, I only needed lipstick and mascara
and I was done. I’ll definitely be taking this on trips and
weekends away. The palette has been careering about in my satchel all
week without too much damage too.
The See you
at Midnight and Precious Metal Highlighting Palettes are gorgeous,
and I’ve enjoyed having a play with them.
I can’t wait to go out
and put together a high-octane look with them, the blue-purple colour
eyeshadow in the Vintage Romance i-Divine collection, and iridescent
Antique Bronze highlighting cream being particular favourites. The
palettes are like glittery Mondrians and have Christmas all over
them. I’m now totally excited about the festive season already. Too
early? Apologies, but gold sparkle will do that to you. Have a go,
you’ll see.
Sleek
Eye and Cheek and Precious Metal Highlighting Palettes are £9.99

Chantecaille Autumn Winter 2014: 15th Anniversary Palette
You have to have a heart of stone (or at least a deep, deep hatred of taupe, you sick puppy) to be able to resist the annual Chantecaille Charity Palettes. Usually items of huge beauty devoted to a single animal cause, tigers, turtles, butterflies and such, it can be difficult to bring yourself to use them. Out next month, the Chantecaille 15th Anniversary Palette is certainly a thing of beauty, and it's very wearable too. I steeled myself to try it out recently:
Clad in the brand's trade-mark pewter livery, the palette comes complete with a facsmile of Sylvie Chantecaille's signature across the top, and inside we have, instead of the usual three eyeshadow shades and a blush, just three eye shades, which makes this a far more compact and portable option than the larger four pan options:
Three shades, each embossed with a different animal. The deep aubergine liner shade has an elephant, the slightly warm vanilla highlight comes complete with a monarch butterfly, and the elegant coppery-taupe has a turtle. All the shades are very wearable, and are very sheer in use:
This pic is slightly more representative of how the colour appear in the flesh, it's shown alongside a couple more pieces from the collection that I'll show you later. However, here is how the colours swatch:
The colours here are swatched over bare skin. Chantecaille isn't particularly known for its deeply pigmented products (which, if you're over the age of, say, 35 or so, is a bit of a blessing. You'll see), so these swatches shouldn't come as much of a surprise. However, if you swatch over an eyeshadow primer (and I never wear shadow without a primer), then you'll see a huge difference:
The shades are complex and flattering, but admittedly, they're not hugely dramatic, though you could create a great smokey eye with this, it's also a lovely wearable daytime palette too.
Unusually for the normal Chantecaille charity palette, this supports three foundations: The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, the Monarch Butterfly Fund and Widecast, which respectively support elephants in the wild, butterflies, and, of course, sea turtles.
It'll be available from SpaceNK next month - will you be picking one up?
The Fine Print: PR Sample.
