Lip Balm Roundup.

I've been collecting lip balms again! I know I do a lip balm post seemingly every other week (there is a reason the blog is called Get Lippie, you know ...)  but the last few have concentrated on more natural ranges, and I thought that this week that I'd talk about some which are chock-full of chemicals and science an' t'ings. 

I'll do this in ascending price order, first off:

Malin+Goetz Lip Moisturizer (It's American, mmkay?)

What they say:

Scientifically synthesized to instantly restore and replenish, our hydrating lip gel is easily integrated for daily maintenance, prevention, and treatment of dry, irritated lips.  Absorbent fatty acids, unlike traditional oils and drying waxes and silicones that are often licked off or wiped away, nourish upon impact while offering a continual layer of hydrating protection throughout the day and night.  Fragrance, flavor and color free.


What Lippie says:

Putting aside the rather unappetising descriptions of "fatty acid hydration technology" on the packaging, this is actually a knockout lipbalm, you need only the tiniest amount of this silky-textured gel to soothe even the sorest of dry lips.  Applied lightly, it makes a great base for lipstick, and it's one you can instantly feel doing your lips some good.  It's unusual in that it's not a grease-type of balm, and it's totally non-sticky.

A little of this really goes a long way, so you can expect your £9 tube of this from Liberty to last quite some time.

Now for Dior Addict Lip Glow

 What They Say:

What Lippie Says:

80's-tastic packaging, or what?  This is another flavourless non-sticky gloss, but it's more traditionally "grease-based" than the Malin+Goetz formulation.  I find the colour effect to be very subtle, just leaving the faintest hint of baby-pink on my lips in a way that's really quite flattering. It's not at all dramatic though. It's not as good a treatment as the M&G, but it is quite moisturising, though the effect doesn't last all that long.  I suspect it wouldn't be as great for sore, or chapped lips as other balms, but it does have an SPF of 10 (not 15 as I was told in store).  It has a very soft texture in the tube, and I think it wouldn't last all that long in daily use, as you have to reapply it quite often.  Nice for a soft subtle look to your lips if lipstick and/or gloss just feels like too much effort.

Lip Glow costs £18.50 and you can find it in most department stores.

And finally:


Kaplan MD Lip 20

What they say:

What Lippie says: 

This one is so scientific that it took me a fair few minutes to figure out how to open the thing (you turn the bottom, the cute little lid slides up, then the balm pops out).  Seriously, I've been stumped by an Estee Lauder mascara tube recently, then this, and the other day, I couldn't figure out how to open a cardboard box. Either this means that designers are getting too clever for their own good, or I really am a cack-handed muppet.  I know which explanation I prefer ...

Anyhoo, onto the balm.  Unlike the other two this is a plumping product.  It definitely lives up to the "no irritation" claim, as you can't feel any cinnamon or peppermint oil on your lips whilst wearing and as a result it doesn't have that familiar "tingle" that you get wearing plumping glosses. It does have a flavour, albeit a very faint one.  To me it's very slightly sweet and the taste makes me nostalgic for ... er ... something! It's a flavour that reminds me of my childhood, for some strange reason, but for the life of me, I can't figure out what it is! It's driving me nuts, I don't mind admitting. Lip 20 also has an SPF of, you guessed it ... 20.

I have fairly plump lips anyway, so I don't use it for it's plumping effects - you can definitely feel you're wearing this one, out of the three balms here, this has the most slip on the lips - but it's a very glam, and almost sci-fi tube that'll have people marvelling at you when you use it in public. In a good way, I mean, not in a "look at that weirdo putting on lip balm" kind of way! I have the clear version, but I've heard extremely good things about the coloured versions too, there are four shades, from nude through to red.

You can get Lip 20 from - again! - the lovely, lovely people at Cult Beauty, and it retails for £22.50.

I always have a lip balm in my makeup bag, and I bet you're wondering which one of these has made it into that hallowed container, hmn?  Well, in sad/mad/bad (delete as applicable) confession time: they ALL have. My makeup bag always has about twelvety million lip products - and the occasional eyeliner wondering how the hell it got there - and all three of these balms are in there, I've been rotating their useage.

Makeover: Kerry

After a bit of last minute confusion with one of my other volunteers, the lovely Kerry stepped in to have a makeover, and I'm glad she did, as this is one of my favourites!

Meet Kerry:

Kerry is really very pretty already, with enormous green eyes.  Sometimes Kerry thinks she looks a bit young (never an issue as far as I'm concerned!) so was looking to create a sophisticated "grown-up" look, that was hopefully a bit glamorous too.

As always, we started with the base.  Kerry has beautiful porcelain skin, so we used Bobbi Brown liquid foundation in "porcelain" as the main base, and Benefit's You're Bluffing as a concealer on the birthmark on her upper lip.  I decided against using Bluffdust as a powder because Kerry is so pale, and we used ELF HD Powder to set the look instead:

Then, to make the most of Kerry's gorgeous eyes, I made use of a Bobbi Brown palette I have that features mainly chocolate shades, I applied a shimmer wash of colour over Kerry's lids, then defined the crease with a darker shimmery brown shade:

Once they were in place, I lined the eyes with "coffee, and applied just a little more shimmer to Kerry's  lids:

 

 

Once that was in place, I darkened Kerry's brows just a little (with Smashbox brow powder kit), and added a single layer of Clarins Wonder Perfect Mascara, the difference was amazing!

A light touch of Cargo Plant Love's Wind (please note no schoolgirl jokes today, thank you) around the cheekbones and temples to warm the look up a bit, and then I used NARS Sex Machine on Kerry's lips, and finished with a tiny slick of Dior lipgloss (the name of which has worn off, but is a very pale pink with a hint of green iridescence.  Nicer than it sounds, honest!)  Here's how it looked when it was all put together:

Products I love - Updated!

For those of you who followed my last blog, you'll know that the original of this post (below!) was written the best part of five years ago ... how time flies! So I'm going to update the post, and see what's been replaced, and what's still going strong. I'll be doing a separate list of my new favourites later.



Kerastase Dermo Calm shampoo - Simply the best anti-dandruff shampoo there has ever been, for us sensitive scalped, dry haired people, plus it's good for coloured hair. Now sadly rumoured to be discontinued, I've recently bought four bottles just in case

... UPDATE I still use this, it was never discontinued (don't trust those pesky sales people who are only interested in upselling you to the products with better commission!) and I still love it. Have never found a product that soothes as well, and is as gentle on the hair.



Diorific 008 Mystic Mauve - The perfect neutral lipstick, if one ignores the quite ridiculously bulky packaging. Goes with smokey eyes or no-makeup makeups, somehow just makes your lips look polished and gives the perfect finishing touch to any face. And it makes your teeth look whiter, which is marvellous.

... UPDATE I still use this lipstick too, but I've redefined the colours I use as neutral these days, I use a lot more caramelly shades, and, some people might think this is odd, I use red as a neutral too. More about that later.


MAC Prolash - Great mascara with bulking fibres to make your lashes look fab of a nighttime. This was my wonder-product till I discovered Lancome Hypnose, which I find doesn't smudge as much.

... UPDATE: MAC simply couldn't compete with the Lancome Hypnose, for me! Sorry MAC, I love you, but Lancome do what they do so very well, it's not a fair competition any more.

MAC Strobe Cream - a cream highlighter/moisturiser. You can use this on your cheekbones/browbones for a highlighter effect, or use it in place of moisturiser for a slightly sheeny dewy effect. I like to dab a little all over a too matte foundation to make it look more natural. Did you know all MAC face products are vitamin enriched, like this one? I didn't either. And it's literally half the price and twice the size of Benefit's similar products.

... UPDATE: Still love this stuff, I love a dewy finish these days - I have reached that age where matte simply won't do any more, alas - and this is a marvel for mixing with other products where a sheen is necessary. There is no glitter, and no sparkles in it, so it's a little more subtle than a lot of shimmering products out there.

Laura Mercier eyeshadow in Twilight - a sort of purply-browny-greyish colour. You can wear this as a light natural colour wash across your lids, it's perfect for bringing out the green tones in hazel or brown eyes, but it also suits blue eyes. Or, you can use it as I do as the basis for the smokey eyes look as detailed earlier. The perfect suits all occasions and colourings eyeshadow.

... UPDATE: Still use this on a regular basis, but I use it more often as a subtle eyeliner, it's a beautiful shade still, and exceptionally versatile.

MAC paint in Untitled - a flesh coloured pigment in an artists paint tube. Can be used anywhere on the face - it comes in a variety of colours and finishes - but this one makes the perfect base for eye makeup, as it evens out the skin tones there, and gives the shadow something to cling to, and makes it last all day, and all night if it has to. Wonderful stuff.

... UPDATE: Still great, and still works (and still on the same tube! This stuff l a s t s) but it has serious competion from Urban Decay eyeshadow primer. In fact, if Urban Decay wasn't packaged so bloody stupidly, it'd be the hands-down winner in this category.


Urban Decay liquid eyeliner - I own about six of these, beautiful colours and simply the best brush yet found for ease of application. Stupid, stupid colour names though.

... UPDATE: Urban Decay still have the best selection of eyeliner colours on the High Street, and the product is just as good, BUT (and it's a big but) the new packaging makes it a lot more wasteful, and less easy to use. A case where less is indeed more when it comes to packaging.

Rimmel pencil eyeliner - there is no eyeliner pencil on the market to rival these budget beauties. Soft, easy to apply, and relatively long lasting, simply no sense in buying more expensive ones.

... UPDATE: They still rule. Other companies might come up with lovelier colours, but for cheap and cheerful, you can't beat Rimmel pencils in the UK. In the US, a totally different story, as Wet'n'Wild rule, but they're difficult to find over here.

Chanel Crystalle - my favourite perfume, I flirt with others, but I always come back to this. A green, floral, herby type scent, that's not at all sweet (my pet hate in perfumes, along with that horrible ingredient in certain perfumes that I haven't identified yet which makes me retch), and apparently it's very sexy. I love it.

... UPDATE: Oh yes, I still love this. But, my other go-to perfume these days is Philosykos by Diptyque. That's a glorious green fig scent. I think green is my favourite perfume type, by far. That and incense. Again, more about that later.


Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream I never leave the house without a tube of this about my person somewhere, I use it as a lip balm, to pat on foundation to get a glow, as an eye gloss (great if you've smudged your liquid eyeliner, and want to make it look like a deliberate action), as a cuticle treatment, on spots, on flaky skin patches such as ankles and elbows, on scratches. It's wonderful, and last for years. Don't buy the lip treatment stick though, it has too much added vitamin e and another ingredient which can actually make your lips flakier. And it doesn't contain petrochemicals, which is one of my pet hates in balm-type products. The original wonder product, and still the best as far as I'm concerned.

... UPDATE: Still can't be bettered, as far as I'm concerned. I must have a tube, tub, jar, or tin of every single balm on the market, and I must pick up a new one every week, but the only thing I've found 8hr Cream can be bettered on is scent. 8hrs wins because, when it comes down to it, it's more versatile. Wouldn't want to waste something gorgeously smelling on burns and zits now, would you?

Chanel Rouge Noir lipstick and nail varnish Beautiful colours, beautiful packaging. Chanel do reds better than any other make up company, and these are the best reds ever, no question.

... UPDATE: Controversial, this one. They are still the best reds ever, but not for me, these days, I think. They're beautiful, but they're too dark and too ageing for me to wear regularly. Currently, my favourite red is a Givenchy CanCan which is the brightest reddest red I can find - at the moment! - and I find it gives my face a little lift, which can only be a good thing, right?

Products I Love

There are so many cosmetic products out there these days, that products don't really need to stand the test of time, there is always the latest "wonder product" to replace things with. For me, the test of whether a product is any good or not is "Will I buy it again?" and, in the vast majority of cases, the answer quite simply is no. Luzzegain suggested I make a list of products I've bought twice, and would happily buy again so here it is:
