I love instagram at the moment, and one of my favourite things I do on there is cataloguing my daily perfume and lipstick choices via the hashtag #LipsNspritz. Lipstick and perfume are really the final finishing touches to any outfit, and, whilst no one needs to know how boring my eyemakeup and dress-choices are every day (cardigans ROOL!), perfume and lipstick do add life and colour to this accountants day, every day.

Occasionally you need a Tom Ford day, and I'm entranced by the Sahara Noir bottle.  It's just so blingy and OTT.  But the fragrance inside is a good one, reminding me heavily of Serge Luten's Ambre Sultan, but drier and with a touch less spice.  I paired it with Tom Ford Cherry Lush, which is a wonderful cheerful cherry red.  Cartier La Panthere is another stunning bottle, carved from the inside into an intaglio of a panther head, and the contents are sophisticated and really interesting.  Both waxy and leathery, and heavily floral with hints of gardenia once it dries down, it starts with muted fruit.  It's softer than this makes it sound, and I really like it.  I paired it with No7 lipstick in Soft Ruby, another of my pinky-red favourites.  This perfume really calls for a punchy shade of lip!

 Jo Malone London Wood Sage and Sea Salt.  I don't really know what to say about this one, as it was at the launch of this fragrance where I discovered that I had lost my sense of smell completely.  Being able to smell it now is a mixed blessing. It's a sea-salty-herbal fresh fragrance, with a hint of something else beneath that my damaged nose now can't put a name to.  I'm annoyed that I missed such an interesting fragrance from Jo Malone London!  I paired it with Tom Ford Scarlet Rouge, a bright and very, very warm red.

At a launch for a book written by a friend of mine (more about this later this week), I wore a fragrance I'd had a (tiny) hand in creating myself: Paradox by 4160 Tuesdays.  It's bright with violets and lemons, dark and earthy with orris and grounded by woods and musk.  I truly love it, and can't believe that something so lovely and unexpected came out of such a dark and horrible time of my life.  It's the only fragrance I'll be repeating whilst #LipsNspritz is ongoing, because sometimes, familiarity is what you need.  I paired it with the violet-plum of Becca Matte lipstick in Antoinette, because I'm good like that.

And finally this week, Lily and Spice by Penhaligons.  I'm so annoyed that they discontinued this, I can't even begin to tell you, as it's a stone-cold classic fragrance. An almost photo-realistic lily fragrance over a bed of warm and creamy spice (saffron and clove, apparently), it's a beautiful and glorious perfume for a chilly autumn day.  Such a shame it's impossible to get hold of now.  I was wearing a dress on Friday, and fancied a more ladylike lipstick than usual then, so went with Clarins Joli Rouge in Pink Berry, a creamy pink that doesn't scream LIPSTICK when you're wearing it.

Lipsticks of the Week

Ah, Lipstick of the week, it's been a while, eh?  I assure you, I've been wearing just as much lipstick as always, but there's been no sunlight for pictures for ages!  With the change in the weather recently, autumnal berries and plums have been calling out to me this week, so this is what I've been wearing:

 Soft Ruby is a beautiful pinked red, Saint Wine is possibly my favourite lipstick of all time - a perfect MLBB shade that is a lovely shade on the lips.  Healthy Lips is similar to Saint Wine, but a pinker, brighter version.  Live Large is an opaque mauve berry, which is good for a more dressy look, but isn't as "in your face" as a bright red.  Sinner Wine is (of course) the opaque version of Saint Wine, a gorgeous berrywine colour that suits cooler mornings perfectly.  Fig Baume de Rose is my "barely there" lipcolour.  The swatch looks quite terrifying on the paper there, but it's pretty and fresh on the lips!

But I can't be everywhere, sadly.  So, when I heard about the new No7 Match Made Lipstick service, I was intrigued.  Based on their foundation-matching technology, Boots No7 have now created 43 lipstick shades and grouped them according to how well they go with each individual No7 foundation shade.  You go to your favourite Boots store (we've all got one), ask them to scan your skin tone, and you'll come away with a little card that groups your best shades of pink, coral, red, plums and natural lipsticks, in a variety of moisturising and matte finishes. It's painless, and really good fun!

I popped along to Boots on Oxford Street last Saturday to see the lipstick matching in action, and help people with their pressing lipstick questions - we had lots of fun! We had a photobooth, and we spent a happy hour or four getting people matched up with their best shades, then going for a little singalong in the booth before taking pics of ourselves in our new lipstick shades. We met some lovely people, and if you were one of them, thank you for popping by!

Geometric Nails featuring Models Own, No7 and Seche Vite

I’ve got a bit of thing for bare nails with a splash of colour; often I’ll do a French manicure but with bright coloured or multicolour tips. It’s really quick and high impact. This week I wanted to create something a bit more unusual, so got out my Models Own nail tape and created this Modern geometric design. Here’s how:

First up, make sure your nails are squeaky clean before applying the nail art tape. Using two strips of tape per nail, create a triangle shape at the top of each nail. Make sure you keep the tape a bit longer than your nail so it’s easier to pull off.

Then apply your chosen colour to the triangle area. I chose a No7’s Stay Perfect in Me! Me! Me! Your first coat should be light…try not to gloop too much on. Don’t wait too long before you apply the second coat and again try to keep it light while getting the colour depth you need.

Once your second coat is on, don’t wait long before carefully removing the nail tape, using tweezers. If you wait too long you’ll get a jagged edge to your triangle.

Once all the tape is removed you can tidy up any rough edges with remover on a fine brush before applying a good quality top coat. I use Seche Vite, for its speed-dry amazingness.

And there you have it, hipster nails worthy of a trip to Dalston. Undercut and Fixie bike optional.

No7 Beautiful Skin BB Cream

BB Creams, you'll be hearing a lot about these this year, you mark my words.  I've used a couple of BB (Blemish Balm - contrary to the name, they're not actually just to be used on troubled skin)-style creams already, and I haven't been that impressed with them to be honest, they've just been tinted moisturisers that someone has slapped the BB label on.

BB Creams are meant to be an all-in-one product, crossing the boundary between skincare and cosmetic, and taking the place of moisturiser, serum, primer and foundation.  So, how does this one from No7 measure up?

Well, the answer is, extremely well, actually.  I have combination skin, oily in some places and dry in others, and  was sent the normal/dry cream to trial, in the shade fair.  As you can see from the above pictures, the No7 BB cream is on the thick side, and on initially squeezing from the tube (you need to shake it first), it  feels very rich and nourishing.

It soon sheers out though:

At first, I thought this was a little dark for my pale skin, but it blends in very nicely, and leaves a very nice sheer, dewy finish.

I've found that the coverage is quite buildable, and it covers my red bits quite nicely, especially if I put a little extra over any particularly stubbornly flushed areas. I don''t really need to powder over it, and I haven't felt the need to put foundation over the top, which is almost unheard of.

Whilst you can use it without serum or moisturiser underneath - I have trialled it both with and without, it was perfectly fine either way - in this cold weather, I do still layer a little (but less than usual)  cream underneath, just for a little added protection from the cold.  That's just my choice though. In summer, I'd probably be happy to wear this entirely alone, it has five star UVA coverage, and contains a factor 15 sunscreen too, which is very handy!

I've found that it lasts very well, and in fact lasts a lot better than foundations costing two or three times the modest price of £12.95. It certainly it stands up to the rigours of driving a desk in my office, so all in all, I'm very impressed!  No flare ups, no scaly patches, no wishing for more coverage.  No zits! I'll be honest, I don't think the tube will last that long - you do tend to use more than you would a normal foundation, as you're using it as moisturiser as well - but at this price, it's quite hard to argue that it's a problem.

And we all know I'm not easily impressed ...

When Poppy King met No7

A brand new range of lip products were born:

 
I can't deny that I have a bit of a fangirl crush on Poppy King, aka the Lipstick Queen,  she's a stylish lady who is basically dedicating her life to lipstick.  Much like myself but, you know, with style and a lipstick company, and business sense and stuff.  I own something from practically every release she's done over the last few years or so, and, even when I think the ideas are a bit suspect (hello Jean Queen), I can't deny that she's onto something.


Poppy believes that there's a perfect lipstick (indeed a perfect red lipstick) for everyone, even people who hate lipstick, and this, her latest collection of lipsticks - and glosses - in collaboration with No7, which is released this week, is almost entirely perfectly pitched, in my opinion.


The lipsticks and glosses are entirely without shimmer, sparkle and glitter (and expect me to have more to say about glitter in cosmetic products later on in the week), and flavour, which makes a refreshing change.  There are seven shades in the range which runs the gamut from nudes to pinks to reds to browns to berries.


At the recent press launch, I was given Romance and History to try - which are, luckily the two I'd have gone right out and purchased that day, had they been available!

As you can see, both the glosses and the lipsticks swatch on the sheer side, Romance is a nice neutral pink, and History a sheer neutral red, not too orange, not too blue. Now, whilst they are sheer, they are buildable, particularly if you layer the gloss and lipstick together.

As you can see, alone, the lipsticks are sheer, and have a satin - not too glossy - finish, but adding a slick of the (slightly sheer on it's own) lipgloss intensifies the colours.  


Both the gloss and lipsticks are hydrating, and non-drying, although the wear is about average for such a balm-like product, a couple of hours, and they won't really last much beyond your morning cup of coffee. But they are so soft and hydrating that re-applying them isn't too much of a problem.  Best of all, the lipgloss isn't sticky!


The packaging on the lipsticks is nice, it's very different to normal No7 offerings, which I normally think look a bit cheap - even the special limited editions.  Metal cased, and rather on the small side, they actually contain a full-size lipstick, and they're more than comparable to the original Lipstick Queen lipsticks, including price, as they're going on sale for £12 each.


Sadly, the lipgloss packaging isn't that brilliant - Poppy explained it wonderfully at the launch, talking of Bakelite, Man Ray and Marilyn Monroe, and other such great visuals, and her lookbook was amazing ... but, just adding a spotty lid to a lipgloss isn't really that inspiring, to be honest.  Also, the doe foot applicator doesn't pick up much product - and tends to wipe off that which you do apply -  I'd have much preferred a brush, particularly for layering!  The lipgloss will be available for £11.


The range will be available both in-store and online later this week, I'll be going in to pick up one or two of the other shades, will you?

Lifesavers! Bath products for the shower ...

No, I haven't gone insane, I just haven't had a bath for a month.  I really, really, really want a bath. I love baths, and have been known to spend several hours in there, just floating, reading, relaxing, and chilling, really.  They're where I go when I need a little respite from the daily grind (and they're where I can hide from MrLippie - don't tell him) Occasionally, I even, you know, clean myself in there too.  Showers simply don't compare.  In fact, whilst I'm being honest, I shall admit that I find showers rather unpleasant. Purely a necessary evil, as far as I'm concerned.

So, having spent the last month confined to showers only (and quick showers at that), has been a trial for me.  I love my luxurious bath oils - Ren Rose Otto is still a world beater as far as I'm concerned - and I miss my "me-time".  I've been avoiding shower gels during my bath-prohibition, as I can find them a bit drying and, the thought of itchy skin combined with healing scars after my operation still makes me wince a little bit!

So, I've been delighted to find that Aromatherapy Associates bath oils can be used in the shower too.  At a cost of £26.50 (£2.95 each, more than comparable to a Lush Bath Ballistic, for example) these are completely luxurious to use in the shower as the scent is amazing, and you still get clean.  To use these as shower oils, you simply rub them over your (dry) skin, prior to getting into the shower, and then rinse off as normal with your shower instrument of choice.  There are nine scents in the box, and my own personal favourite is the Deep De-Stress oil, which is meant for aching muscles, but I find the gingery, herby scent most invigorating!

For a shower treat that's a little more traditional in style, I've also been using No7 Shower Oil, which claims to foam gently. Personally, I find it foams barely at all (even on a shower puff), but the scent is nice, it leaves my skin silky soft, and it cleans admirably. Plus, at a cost of £8.75, it's a little more purse-friendly than the Aromatherapy Associates, albeit this means that there are a few synthetics in there, so I suggest you check the label before buying.

Two more weeks till bath-time!  I can't wait.  For serious.

Nail of the Day - Nubar Lustful Red

One from the Nubar Risque Reds collection that was released recently, I really like it.  A blue-red creme it applies smoothly (if a little on the thick side, but nothing that can't be fixed with a couple of drops of thinner), and evenly. There is no shimmer, and no glitter I really like it for a dramatic old-school"Hollywood" nails look.  Pic above is two coats shown over an Orly basecoat, and without a topcoat. Okay, it's not very edgy, but it is classic and pretty, and I like it. You can buy Nubar polishes from Beautyshed, who are lovely people, they cost £8 each.

Speaking of "edgy" though, I was at Boots No7 Autumn/Winter trends preview last week, and they're releasing a matte topcoat for nails in August, and I managed to snag a bottle.  I was wondering what a classic glossy red nail would look like mattified and here it is:

I think I kind of prefer this shade matte, to be honest, it's more of a raspberry/cranberry colour once the gloss is removed,  what do you think?  No7 Stay Perfect Matte Topcoat will be available in Boots stores from August 11th, and will cost £7.25.  I've just doubled my varnish wardrobe!  Hmn ... wonder what matte toenails will look like?

Reader Request - Highlighters

When I wrote this post about the YSL Palette Y-Mail highlighter a few weeks ago, one of my lovely readers, Renata asked about my favourite highlighters, and what I'd recommend.  Well, my first thought, I have to admit was "I don't have many highlighters, I'll never get a full post out of that!".  I was wrong.  A quick scout around my makeup collections (yes, I have more than one) turned up 13 of the shimmery little suckers.  And, since I rounded them up and took pictures of them, I found a few more too.  Clearly, I have too much makeup.

I thought instead of one mahoosive post of various shiny strips of skin with barely any differences between them, I'd break up the posts into the different textures.  Today, it's liquids and creams:

Nars Copacabana: Much as I love my Nars multiples (and I do!) I have to say that this one doesn't really do much for me.  It's a little frosty on my skin, even when blended in really well.  A beautiful shade for cooler skintones, perhaps, but I end up looking a little metallic, which is never a good look. I've since swapped this one for something I love far, far more, and I'll show you what that is very soon.

Prescriptives Cream Highlight: Apologies for talking about a discontinued product from a discontinued brand, but this was, for a very long time, my very favourite highlighter!  The label has worn off, so I can't even tell you what it was called when it was available.  As you can see, it's a little more peach than the NARS, and so melds more with my skin-tone, rather than sits "on" it.  It's still, it has to be said, a little too metallic for my tastes these days.

Benefit High Beam: Again, another frosty one, I flip-flop  on Benefit products at the best of times (when they're good, they're very, very good, but when they're bad, they're infuriating!), this is one I like, the packaging is good, it's a nice texture, but the pinkish frostiness isn't one that suits as many people as Benefit always say they will.  It's nice to apply, but again, can make you look a little metallic.

No7 Skin Illuminator: This is one I picked up the week before last, and I really, really like the product. Unlike many highlighters, this actually comes in two shades, one pink, and one peach.  This one is peach.  As you can see, the colour of the highlighter almost disappears into my skin - or when it's not swatched this heavily for photographic purposes, it does, anyway!- I'm not, it must be said, a massive fan of the packaging, it seems purposely designed to make you waste the product (indeed, even the box states you should wipe the "excess" off onto your hand before using the brush to apply it to your cheeks) but the liquid inside is a good one, not metallic, not frosty, and not glittery.  It's a very glow-y natural kind of highlighter, and it's one I'll be getting back-ups of at the earliest opportunity.  It's also the cheapest highlighter on this page at £11, £6 if you have any Boots vouchers.
