GOSH Spring Summer 2014

By Tindara

Greetings Get Lippie-ers! I’m back back back. It’s been tough old game but I’ve been sampling lots of new things recently. Not least the new stuff from the GOSH Spring Summer range. I’ve been a GOSH fan for a while, I think their Velvet Touch eyeliners are brilliant and easily as good as my previous staple MAC Powerpoint at double the price. So, I was excited to get stuck into my goody bag.

There are lots of lovely new things in the range, the Lip Lacquers are cute and would make sweet presents for a teen relative. They’re contained in nail polish style bottles with an application wand in the lid. There are a host of pleasing summery colours, including shimmery neutrals, pinks, corals, and reds, with a not-too-glossy sheer shine.

The lipsticks are also really good value, moisturising, and good colours, particularly in the neutrals. They last very well too for a lipstick at this price point. I’m a bright lipstick girl normally but I’ve really taken to the Innocent, Nude and Sweetheart. They’re flattering and go very well with a smudgy smoky eye.

Which leads me onto the new Eyeshadow Forever Pencils. These are a great dupe for the many more expensive eyeshadow pencils on the market like Smashbox and Charlotte Tilbury. They twist up so there’s no need for sharpening, and come in gorgeous blendable metallic shades which are perfect for this season. After a minute or so they set and stay put the whole day. I’ve been using Brown, Grey, and Beige most, the latter being an excellent subtle pearly look particularly good on paler skins.

The real star of the show, however, is the Prime ‘n Set Primer and Mattifying Setting Powder. I had never used a powder as a primer before but this is a revelation. I’ve used lots of primers but none worked as well as using a light touch of this powder before foundation. It felt dry and comfortable all day even on a sweltering London tube journey. It’s also a really good setting powder and very similar to the Nars Light Reflecting Setting Powder at a fraction of the cost. Just saying. Here’s hoping GOSH bring out a pressed version soon.

GOSH Lip Laquer is £5.99. GOSH Velvet Touch Lipstick is £6.49. GOSH Eyeshadow Forever Pencils are £5.99. GOSH Prime ‘n Set Primer and Mattifying Setting Powder is £9.99. They’re all on offer at Superdrug with a few quid off at the moment. No pressure.

A Week in Eyeshadow

Another week, another week of eyeshadow - here's what I've been wearing this week:

Top Row (L-R)
Shu Uemura Olive 471 with MakeUpDesignory (MUD) liner in Black Forest
Guerlain Coup de Foudre palette with Tom Ford Plum Absolute liner (I'm a little bit in love with this, you might have noticed)
Tom Ford Pink Haze Cream Color with Sephora Flirting Game in the crease, and Clinique Intense Ivy Quickliner

Bottom Row - (L-R)
Clarins Iris Blossom Palette with Tom Ford Plum Absolute Liner
Smokey eye with random shades from an unamed palette (useful, I know) and Clinique Intense Ebony Quickliner
No eyeshadow whatsoever with YSL Babydoll pink liquid liner and Clinique Intense Ebony Quickliner smudged into the lashes. (more about this look later on in the week)

Anything catch your eye?

Becca Sunchaser Ultimate Eye Colour Quad

Something a little less bright, but no less pretty, on the blog today.  The summer palette from Becca is the Sunchaser set this year, and it's a lovely one.

So many summer collections are either too orange or contain a bright that is less than useful, so for us who prefer to stay pale year-round (you will never see me write about a home fake-tanning product on here), a lot of summer collections are pretty much unwearable.  This was a really lovely surprise when it arrived, for it's a beautiful selection of nude shades, which has very quickly gained a place in my heart

The four shades are: (clockwise from top) Matte Buff, Softly Metallic Peach, Metallic Tweed and Metallic Sienna.  I wouldn't really describe any of these shades as a "metallic", they're soft shimmers, and I can't really tell the difference between the "soft metallic" and just plain "metallic" either.

This, for me, is an almost perfect "nude" eyeshadow palette - I don't get along with the Urban Decay Naked palette too well - I've been away a couple of times this month, and this palette has come away with me on each trip, as you can create a "no-makeup" look quite easily, but by changing the amount of Tweed and Buff that you use (Tweed as a liner, and Buff in the contour), you can make a softly smokey eye very easily too.

Swatches don't show much (they've been done with a finger over bare skin) but that's kind of why I like it, it's the perfect summer collection for the pale as the dead, like what I am.

The Sunchaser Quad will be available from SpaceNK soon for £32.

Body Shop Colour Crush Eyeshadows

As spring has allegedly sprung, I thought I'd break out some colours on the blog - well it makes a change from sludges and reds, I guess!  The redeveloped Colour Crush Eyeshadows from the Body Shop have been on counters for a little while now, they're really pretty and I've actually been impressed with the texture, so I thought it was about time they made an appearance.

As you can see, I was sent quite a collection, here we have:
Top row: Sweet Pea, Boyfriend Jeans & Berry Cute
Middle: Grape Expectations, Berry Cheeky & Blackcurrant Affair
Bottom: Golden Girl & Caramel Flirt

This is a really nice set of colours, they're fairly pigmented, and are soft and velvety in use, I've not experienced much fallout with them, either.

I've swatched them here with my finger over bare skin, so you can see how pigmented they are in normal use - the colours are brighter over a primer, of course, but I know a lot of my readers don't use eyeshadow primers:

Bright, eh?  And even brighter with a primer!  My picks from this set of shades would be Grape Expectations, and Golden Girl (as a highlighter), and possibly Blackcurrant Affair, but that's just me.

The shadows last quite well, but if you wear them on bare skin they will fade rather quickly (within a couple of hours).  At seven pounds per shade, they're fairly bargainacious too ...

Guerlain SS13 Ecrin 4 Couleurs: 501 Attrape Coeur 502 Coup de Foudre

My love for Guerlain makeup is pretty well-documented by now.  Well, hopefully it is, anyway.  I caught the briefest glimpse possible of their Spring/Summer collection recently and was delighted, featuring as it does decidedly un-pastel purples and greens.  I have an unbearable loathing for pastel-shades, finding any colours that have too white a base tend to sit "on" my skin rather than blend with it.  Anyway, for the rest of this week, I'll be showing you the collection, and today I'm starting with the two eyeshadow palettes, which are rather beautiful.

Packaged in the signature gold palettes of the Ecrin 4 Couleurs line, the two palettes this spring feature bright, unexpected violets, purples and mauves in Attrape Coeur, and beautiful greyed-out greens and khakis with a pop of coral in Coup de Foudre:

See, beautiful, and very unexpected for a spring collection.  Let's take a closer look at both:

501 Attrape Coeur is a symphony of cool-toned purples with a frosty white added for definition.  I'll be honest, I found this difficult to swatch:

As the shadows are rather hard, but I'm going to try this again with a harder brush and over a primer.  I'll let you know how I get on.

502 Coup de Foudre is also a beauty, however, with that gorgeous and extremely unexpected hit of warm coral, alongside those silvery-greens.  It swatches more easily than the purple Attrape Coeur, too:

I can't wait to try out a face of the day with these - I'll be sure to take pictures when I do.  In particular the gunmetal shade on the left there is calling my name rather loudly.  Guerlain have been doing some really interesting palettes lately - their autumn collection was a symphony of rather beautiful oranges and browns too, I think there's a dupe of the coral shades in the Les Fauves palette from that collection, I'll report back.

Guerlain shadows are normally long-lasting, and blend really easily, even if they're not the most buttery-soft shadows out there.  They're actually designed to be applied in any order, with not too much emphasis placed on shade placement.  I'll show you some looks soon.

The Guerlain Ecrin 4 Couleurs palettes cost £37 each, which is, admittedly, quite a hefty price,  but for Coup de Foudre in particular, I think it's worth it for a rather unique set of colours.

Urban Decay Naked Basics Palette

Most of the hype regarding the previous two Naked palettes by Urban Decay passed me by.  Whilst I like a nice range of nude shaded tones as eyeshadows, somehow I just didn't "get" what other people were seeing in the palettes.  They are nice, yes, but, I think I prefer a bit more sludge with my shades - I found it difficult to see which shades went together in the other palettes.

So when I was offered an advance palette by Debenhams of the new Naked Basics palette from Urban Decay, I uhmmed and ahhed a bit before saying yes.  What changed my mind about this one is that it is largely matte, and it's a lot smaller than the other two palettes - I like mixing and matching my shadows from a range of sources (usually singles), and this new palette contains only six shades:

The first thing I noticed is that this palette veers towards the cool, and the pale.  Venus, the first shade on the right there, is the only shade that contains shimmer, and all the rest are completely matte.    For me W.O.S and Naked 2 work best - WOS as an all-over shade, and Naked 2 in the crease, with Faint and Crave as liners.   If I fancy a smokier look, I can use Faint in the crease, or the outer corner of my eye to make things a bit more defined.

Venus and Foxy are a bit too pale to work for me, really.  The shades are really quite pigmented, if not quite as buttery soft as I expected them to be, but they show up well enough on skin.  They are better over a base, of course, but the above swatches are on bare skin, and they still show quite well.  Crave has applied streakily for some reason in the swatch, but in use, applied with a good brush as a liner, it's actually a good, deep black that can be blended out for a smokey liner effect.

All in all, this is a nice palette, that I think I'll get a lot of use out of.  It's not - as far as I'm concerned - the most exciting palette in the world, but it's a good workhorse, and it'll be great for creating no-makeup makeup from now on.

The Urban Decay Naked Basics Palette is available from Debenhams from Tuesday 11th December.  Will you be getting one?

Estee Lauder Violet Underground Eyeshadow Palette

I may have let out a little "squee" of excitement when I saw the promo image of this palette from Estee Lauder, from the gorgeous purple packaging to the contents, this had Get Lippie written all over it.  Not literally, of course, but you know what I mean.  Anyway, take a look:

So pretty, and such an unusual selection of shades.  Fuchsia, Copper, Navy, Champagne and Black, and, it's surprisingly versatile, as I'll show you later - don't let that bright pink put you off:

I love how textured and gorgeous the shadow pans are.  The shadows are the "tribrid" texture, which is an amalagam of cream, powder and gel, and the shades are fairly pigmented, and quite complex as a result.

This is just one pass on bare skin with the sponges from the palette, you can get a heavier application with your fingers or a densely-haired brush.

All the shades, even the pink are very wearable, the champagne shade almost blends with my skin, but I assure you that it's in the swatch pics!  Only the black has a matte texture, usable for lining with a thin brush.

Best of all, you can mix the shades, if you layer the pink over the blue, you get a beautiful multichromatic smoky purple, which I adore:

Perfect for more dramatic looks.

What do you think of Violet Underground?  It's limited edition, and available on counter now for £40.  There's an eyeliner and four new lipshades to go with it too ...

The Fine Print: I may have begged for this one.
